Place and time of harvest: Parco della Bosca, Val Tartano.

The best time for harvesting is from May to July. The stems should be collected manually chopping them off with the hedge shears at about 10-20 cm from the ground.

Main morphological characteristics: it is a perennial herbaceous plant, equipped with a long creeping underground rhizome from which, in the spring, before the branching stems of yellow- brown fertile ending with ovoid formations, then the sterile stems, (the ones used for the collection) branched with numerous branches that start from nodes, green for chlorophyll content. In this plant, therefore, there are no real leaves, nor visible flowers.

Main components: silicic acid, potassium, flavonoids, saponosidi, phytosterols, ascorbic acid, malic and oxalic, alcaloidee (traces).

Horsetail has a strong mineralizing action particularly useful in the formation of bones and connective tissue support. It also seems that the flavonoids contained in this plant, together with the silicon, resulting in an increase in the number of osteoblasts (the cells that build new bone) and a more marked their activities while they would be able to reduce both the number and the activity of osteoclasts (cells that destroy bone) .
It is an excellent diuretic due to its complex composition also rich in potassium, calcium, flavonoid glycosides and saponins.
It is a good detoxifier useful to eliminate metabolic waste ( in Russia its action has been studied in the removal of lead poisoning).

The healing and hemostatic action makes it an excellent repair tissue and therefore it is used in cosmetics in the preparation of products against stretch marks, wrinkles and cellulite. Also, fighting the sagging skin, giving the skin elasticity and suppleness, leaving it smooth and silky.
Horsetail also helps in cases of water retention, cellulite, eye- leg and ankle swelling.

The silicic acid of the Horsetail, unlike other plant sources, is in water-soluble form, thus easily used by the body.
In the past, equisetum was used to clean the inside of jars and bottles, taking advantage of the shape of its sterile stems, particularly suitable for the purpose.
